PRESIDENT'S  MESSAGE

Where does the time go?  It seems it was just the start of summer and now September is almost here which means our club events will be back in full swing.
Be sure to check out our website and online calendar for upcoming events.

In September we have the first St. Luke's Concert of the season with two performances by the Brass Band of Central Florida.  This is an excellent opportunity to practice some low light photography and enjoy great music at the same time.

Don't forget our Fifth Monday Dinner on the 29th at Habaneros and that we don't have a meeting on Labor Day.  Our September field trip is still in the planning stages so keep an eye on your email for the details and please join us.   You might get a picture of me with a chicken.  If you do it could very well turn up in a future newsletter.

WHY VOLUNTEER
Why Volunteer?

Volunteering is a two-way street; it does much more than just support our club.

OPC volunteers have the unique opportunity to go behind the scenes and participate in and photograph events from vantage points not open to the public. Event photography is an opportunity to learn from each other while trying something new, having some fun, and acquiring some new skills.

Our meeting place is provided, at no cost, by Oviedo Recreation and Parks in return for the events we cover for them.   We also provide photography services to local nonprofit organizations that support and promote our club.  The Pictures we provide are used in print and on the internet with the byline "Courtesy of the Oviedo Photo Club" giving us publicity we could never buy.

Why volunteer? It's a win-win situation for everyone.

MEETING - SEPTEMBER 19
Our next meeting on September 19 is our Photo Review.

Bring 3 - 5 pictures taken at recent events or any other recent photos.

Bring your photos in a folder labeled "OPC Review" on a thumb drive that contains only those photos. Use a labeled folder with only those photos in it to make it easy for our projectionist.

If you would like to pre-submit your photos by email, send them to:   oviedophotoclub.programs@gmail.com

WANDERING the WEB with VALLIE

The Audubon Center for Birds of Prey is open to the public.

Their focus is on medical treatment and release of rescued birds of prey in Central Florida. Their website states the center provides an opportunity to view bald eagles, ospreys, kites, owls and falcons up close.  The center is open Tuesday through Sunday 10 am to 4 pm with an $8 adult admission fee.
For more information go to Audubon.org.

OVIEDO FARMER'S MARKET
OVIEDO FARMER'S MARKET
SATURDAY, OCT. 1, 2016,  8am - 1pm

Plan ahead!

We will be hosting a booth at the Oviedo Farmer's Market the first Saturday in October, so decide what you would like to display.

We are asking that members submit no more than four photographs and we will not be able to accommodate boxed prints.  All photographs should be mounted or framed and ready to hang.

As in prior years, the photographs may be offered for sale or simply displayed to show off the club's work.  Any photograph offered for sale must be marked with a price and the member must be present.

The Oviedo Farmer's Market is held the first Saturday of each month at the Lawton House.

MENTOR MOMENT with SCOTT
Aperture Priority.

Now we will look at Aperture Priority,  designated as Av for Canon,  A for Nikon, and the Mode I use most often.

In aperture priority we set the ISO (how deep we want our bath) and the Aperture (how open our faucet) and the camera works out what shutter speed to use (how long to leave the faucet running) to attain consistent exposure.

As you know the Aperture setting allows us to prioritize the depth of field, or how much of the scene is in acceptable focus. For landscapes, we might want everything from a foreground flower to a mountain range in focus so we would choose a 'smaller' aperture value, something like f16 or f22.  This can result in a long shutter speed and we may need a tripod to get sharp images. On the other hand, if we are taking a portrait and trying to isolate the subject by blurring the background a 'wider' aperture like f1.4 or f2 will work better.

But we can also use Av/A Mode to get our fastest shutter speed in changing light.  For instance, while taking pictures of birds in flight where clouds keep the light values changing if we select our lenses widest aperture (lowest number), then the camera will select the fastest appropriate shutter speed to get a consistent exposure.  This means we can concentrate on getting the framing and focus right and not think about the exposure.

Now a really nice modern twist on camera control and auto exposure is Auto ISO. This works particularly well in the above scenario.  Again we want to take pictures of birds in flight and with the fastest shutter speed to prevent motion blur and the lowest ISO to maintain image quality.  We would set our camera to our 150-600mm lens' widest aperture, f5.6, choose Auto ISO and the camera will set the shutter speed over 1/500 sec because it knows the focal length being used.  Then if the light drops too much, rather than drop the shutter speed and cause motion blur, the camera will increase the ISO to maintain the fast shutter speed.

I'll cover Auto ISO in more detail later but the next installment will be shutter speed priority, Tv for Canon users and S for Nikon users. But in the meantime have a play with Aperture priority, it is amazingly flexible and if I could only use one mode is probably the one I'd pick.

Don't forget to bring your camera to all the meetings and whenever we have time we will cover whatever we talked about in the last newsletters. Practice makes perfect and 10,000 hours practice make a master :-)
